Unit Story: New Hope
Big Idea: Why is it important to recognize that America is made up of many diverse people?
Reading Comprehension strategy: Clarifying, visualizations, and making connections. We will continue to review other strategies for comprehension: asking questions, and compare/contrast.
Sound/Spelling: Silent letters
Grammar: Please continue to help your child apply grammar skills learned in class to their writing and reading homework. This week we will review adjectives, nouns, and verbs, homographs, similes, antonyms, and synonyms..
Writing: We will continue to practice how to write better sentences by answering who, what, where, why, and when in their sentences. This week we will focus on complete and incomplete sentences. We are working on including punctuation and sentence endings. Our writing process includes organizing our thoughts on a graphic organizer, writing a rough draft, editing, and writing our final draft. When complete, the students illustrate and read their stories. This is my favorite part of the writing process. This week we are going to work on writing a paragraph. The theme for writing is reflecting on the first grade school year.
Homework: Students should read at least 15 minutes everyday. This is 15 minutes well spent and there
are many creative ways to get reading time. Come see me for some ideas. I am going to be sending home a "Read Every Day" RED log where parents have to sign off on students reading. Please continue to have your child read the phonics books sent home to help with comprehension and fluency.
